We start with the question
Not a topic from a curriculum — an actual question a child asked. What makes my heart go? Where do my tears go? Where does breakfast come from? The science follows the question, which is the order children think in.
We say which bit is the story
Our characters have faces and feelings. That's storytelling, and we tell children so, out loud, inside the book. They learn to tell the magic from the mechanism instead of quietly absorbing a misconception.
The grown-up gets help too

Our books use personification and representative journeys to explain real science. Fe, the iron atom, is a character with a face and a personality — those are storytelling devices, and we say so inside the book. The pathway Fe describes reflects established science, but no individual atom's actual history can be traced.
